My new knitting project

I rarely make something for myself when I knit.

I like to make things for others.  It's great to see what kind of joy my projects bring.  But after busting out a scarf for our church's mission auction and a baby blanket for a new cousin, I wanted to make something for me.

I also wanted to challenge myself.

I tend to knit things that are flat rectangular or square, use bigger needles, and don't require crazy amounts of "advanced" techniques.

But i saw some fingerless gloves in the latest Knitty issue.  Meet the Commuter Gloves:

I fell in L.O.V.E. with these gloves and knew I wanted to try them.

These gloves are knitted in the round on size 4 double pointed needles.  They have a cable pattern on them (so cute) and buttons (which means there are button holes).

I have never knitted in the round.

I have never knitted a cable.

I have never knitted a button hole.

Even though this will be a difficult project for me, I am excited to learn some new techniques.  I am excited about the challenges these will provide.  I am excited because they will push my knitting to the next level.

I found some grey yarn at Michael's today.  The color matches these gloves, but the yarn isn't a wool like the pattern calls for.  I'm not a huge fan of yarn; I find it very itchy. The yarn I found is so soft and warm, so I thought it would be perfect for this project.

(And yes, I will periodically post about my progress).
